Imagine a gaggle of young actors in high-tops and baggy jeans humping teddy bears and dancing to club music. Imagine an array of disco balls, inventive sparkling costumes, and endless pop music. You might hear antiquated sentences, but there's no doubt about it, it's unapologetically Gen Z. So if you're not a fan of Shakespeare, don't let your old opinions sway you. This is a MUST-watch spectacle made to woo you. If you ARE a fan of Shakespeare, it's time to switch up gears and revisit the tragedy in a whole new, electric light.
The upcoming play trims the fat off Shakespeare's work, clocking in forty minutes shorter than a traditional production. The text is shorter and even the cast is reduced to ten (originally twenty-two). But what we're left with is the core essence, the universal emotions that has transcended numerous generations since 1597. Emmy Award winner Kit Connor of Heartstopper takes the role of Romeo, charming not just Juliet but the whole audience through arduous expressions of love. Meanwhile, Golden Globe Award winner Rachel Zegler of Spielberg's West Side Story envelops the role of Juliet, waifish and doe-like with a loaded voice that sparks any heart who hears it. See below for the full cast and creatives.
